How Much to Tip a Delivery Driver?
Food delivery drivers are independent contractors who use their own vehicles, pay for their own gas, and often have no guaranteed minimum wage. Tips are a critical part of their income - and unlike restaurant servers, they don't benefit from social visibility that encourages tipping.
The general rule: $3–5 minimum for small orders, or 10–20% of the order total for larger orders. For orders in bad weather or with special handling, tip on the higher end.
Do Delivery Apps Pass Tips to Drivers?
Most major platforms - DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub - pass 100% of app tips to the driver. Some third-party delivery services have had policies in the past that reduced base pay when customers tipped, effectively offsetting the tip. Always check your app's current tipping policy.
