How Much Should You Tip at a Restaurant?
Tipping at restaurants is one of the most common - and most debated - social customs in the United States. The standard tip for sit-down restaurants is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill, with 20% increasingly becoming the expected baseline for good service.
The formula is straightforward: multiply your bill by your desired tip percentage divided by 100. For a $50 bill with a 20% tip: $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip. Your total would be $60.
When splitting the bill, divide the total (bill + tip) equally among the number of diners. Our restaurant tip calculator handles all of this automatically - just enter the numbers and you're done.
Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?
Technically, tipping etiquette says to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. However, for simplicity many people tip on the full amount including tax. The difference on a typical meal is small, so either approach is acceptable.
